I'm composing this blog post as an email that I expect to send to all of the IGO's active online members. If you received this text in a email it means you have an online membership with the IGO and have logged in here, or more likely in our old site, within the last 14 months. As I ramp up the creation of this new web site (please read some of my past blog posts to learn more) I need your help to suggest, test and verity new features. Make no mistake, this new site is in its infancy and there's not all that much to see here, at least not yet. The features will come with time, and with your assistance and guidance.
The email I mentioned above is one of the new features. This new site gives the BOD and site admins the ability to dispatch emails en masse if/when necessary. The feature allows us to select recipients by role, so we can target just the BOD, all voting members of the IGO, all Supporting Members, etc. Emails can be dispatched in batches of 20 per hour so that our mail servers are not overwhelmed nor the messages falsely tagged as SPAM.
Another new feature is HTTPS security. When you visit the site you should see a "locked" green padlock or similar icon next to the web address. A green lock indicates that your communication with this site is encrypted, and that encryption is provided by a legitimate source. Consequently any information you might enter, like your username and password, is far more secure than it might have been in the past.
I've also recently added a polling feature, and webforms to the new site. These features will be important to the IGO when it comes time to elect a new BOD, and if/when the administration seeks your choices/opinions on IGO matters. If the BOD approves we may soon be able to return to using the site to manage Cache-of-the-Month (COTM) data and voting. For now I've created a single test poll and webform. Once you login to the new site you should be able to see the poll and webform, and feel free to participate in them if you have not already done so. I will give you a sense of what an admin sees when viewing current results of the poll and webform here...
I think a poll like this one, but with results concealed until all ballots are counted, could reasonably be used for COTM voting.
It's not hard to imagine how a webform like "Favorite Days" could be used to conduct the IGO's online election.
If you have not yet logged in to the new IGO site I encourage you to visit https://iowageocachers.org soon. On your first visit you'll need to use a link provided to set a new password. You are welcome to use your old password, but a password reset is still required.
Finally, there's not a lot to see here yet, but I encourage you to visit the new site every few weeks, if not more often, to check on new features we hope to provide in the coming weeks and months.
Thanks and take care.
